Luso-American Education Foundation Adult Grant Guidelines & Application

The Luso-American Education Foundation (LAEF) is dedicated to helping adult college students to succeed by awarding grants for continued education.

The Luso-American Education Foundation offers numerous grants however, all applicants must be….

  • Official Resident of the United States
  • Be of Portuguese/Lusophone ancestry or provide proof of study in the Portuguese language/cultures
  • Must meet one of the following options:
    • Attending a community or four-year college/university
    • Enrolled in a Graduate Program (i.e. Masters, PhD, Credential Program).
    • Be an educator of Portuguese language and/or culture.
    • Preparing for a professional career where the use of the Portuguese language will be used.

Applicant may apply for multiple grants, but will only be awarded one

  • (G-1) Research Project Grant – a non-renewal grant; however, applicant may apply up to 3 academic years. Grant Amount – Up to $2,000

     Applicant must also meet the following requirement:

  1. Conducting research that is relevant to the goals of the Luso-American Education Foundation.
  • (G-2) Portuguese Summer Language Program Grant at a University in the United States – a nonrenewable grant: however, applicant may apply up to 3 academic years. Grant Amount – Up to $2,000

     Must meet at least ONE of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in an accredited college or university not offering any Portuguese language or literature courses.
  2. Be preparing for a professional career where the use of the Portuguese language is useful.
  3. Working towards a BA or higher degree in Portuguese studies.
  • (G-3) Summer Program in Portugal – a non-renewable grant; however, applicant may apply up to 3 academic years. Grant Amount – Up to $3,000

  Must meet at least ONE of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in an accredited college or university not offering any Portuguese language or literature courses.
  2. Be preparing for a professional career where the use of the Portuguese language is useful.
  3. Working towards a BA or higher degree in Portuguese studies.
  • (G-4) Semester Program for Study in Portugal Network (SiPN) –a non- renewal grant; however, applicant may apply up to 3 academic years. Grant Amount – Up to $3,000

Must meet at least ONE of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in an accredited college or university not offering any Portuguese language or literature courses.
  2. Be preparing for a professional career where the use of the Portuguese language is useful. Working
    towards a BA or higher degree in Portuguese studies.
  • (G-5) Program for Educator – Applicant may apply for up to 3 academic years. Grant Amount will vary.

Applicant must also meet the following requirements:

  1. Be an educator of the Portuguese language and/or Lusophone cultures.
  • (G-6) Life -Long Learning – Applicant may apply up to 3 academic years. Grant Amount will vary.

Note:  Applicants preparing for a professional career where Portuguese language will be used, will receive priority.

The Grant application and the following items must be postmarked or received in our office by
MARCH 1st for the application to qualify and be reviewed by the scholarship committee. Your
application will not be considered if these items are not received.

  • Completed Scholarship/Grant Application
  • Submit an official transcript of all college coursework. The transcripts must be issued and
    certified by school officials.
  • Submit the scored from GRE or any other equivalent standardized test.
  • Letters of Recommendation from two individuals who can speak of your character and/or
    financial need.
  • Most recent wallet sized photo of yourself (e-mail to education@luso-american.org) and must
    include your full name.
